Beacon BIDS

Beacon BIDS is a .NET-based Rapid Applications Development Environment designed and developed by Beacon IT Group.

I was involved in the initial design of both the desktop development environment interface and the look and feel of the generated pages.

In 2007 the branding was totally redesigned for version 2.3 of BIDS, and launched internationally.

The image shown here is a splash screen that is shown as BIDS Studio loads on a developer's PC.

Beacon BIDS

(continued)

The jellybeans graph image - used to represent simple 'bean counting' - became common to all BIDS software and marketing collateral. It represented the simplicity of using applications built in BIDS.

Each component of the BIDS development suite had its own colour coding to allow developers to differentiate the component that they are working in.

Beacon BIDS

The BIDS development suite interface was managed via the document component and application module management tree.

The tree held a number of icons that represented specific configuration tasks required to build an application page.

The image shown here is of the different object trees used in the BIDS Studio development environment.

Beacon BIDS Workflow Icons

Beacon's rapid application development environment, BIDS, has a workflow utility software tool that allows users to visually arrange how a document that is created by the system is managed through that system.

Each icon in the BIDS Workflow Tool represents a type of document phase or API interaction in that is displayed on the screen. Clicking on the icon allows a user to set its operational parameters.

DevSpeed

DevSpeed is a .NET-based Rapid Applications Development Environment designed and developed by Beacon IT Group.

Launched in 2008, it was a version of BIDS specifically designed to be licensed by other developers so that they can build their own applications.

The image shown here is a splash screen that is shown as DevSpeed Studio loads on a developer's PC.

Work undertaken

  • Design,
  • Logo,
  • Photography and photomontage,
  • Graphics Production.

Each major component in the development suite had its own colour coding.

The "screaming dude" photomontage illustration was created in Photoshop using a number of stock photographs to create a unique branding image for the product.

DevSpeed

(continued)

The DevSpeed logo was also used as a desktop icon for the application, and also as launch icons for a number of the related utility and configuration applications that made up part of the development suite.

The icons here matched their function. The blue base is for the Studio application, the red base id for the Business Rules Engine and the orange base is for the Server software.

Beacon BIDS Generated Application

BIDS Studio was a rapid application development environment that built complex web applications. Each part of the application was defined and displayed to the developer by using a page building metaphor.

The application used a navigation tree as a way of selecting a configurable object on a page. I designed and produced all of the small icons in the navigation trees shown here in the development environment screen.

Beacon BIDS Generated Application

BIDS Studio produced each page of a web application onto a pre-defined ASPX template.

I designed several different versions of the template for the main demonstration application, BIDS Budget Formulation, from the original BIDS launch in 2005 to the last version I was involved with in 2008.

The pages shown here also show updated utility application icons that were proposed for BIDS 3.0.

Beacon BEAM Assist

Software on a USB Key

The image shown here is of the USB Key packaging design proposals and artwork for the front and back of the key.

The Software allowed budgeting submissions to be done offline and in more flexible work situations.

Loading the software on an encryptable USB key allowed Beacon to provide a more robust and secure solution to the previous method of collecting data, which was sending unprotected Excel spreadsheets via email.
